George Allen Joins Rally Against Health Care

In the health insurance debate, the public option is controversial, and has lots of people working against it. A conservative grassroots group, called Americans For Prosperity, toured Central Virginia Wednesday, fighting any government-run plan. The group held “Hands Off My Healthcare” rallies allowing people to show opposition to the plan.

The people there say this government plan would simply be far too expensive. They say it will tack on more money to the federal deficit, leaving the bill for future generations to pay. They want reform, but to them a government option is the wrong kind.

“I mean take a look at what the government has done. They can’t even run Cash for Clunkers, how could they look at something that costs $900-billion, that’s a conservative estimate,” Lovingston business owner Libby Whitley said.

“I really think it’s going to be a lot more than they’re projecting,” Marianne Smith said.More than two dozen huddled under the Nelson County Court House porch to hear Americans For Prosperity and former Governor George Allen talk about their ideas for change.

Allen says reform should include tax credits for people who want to buy a high-deductible insurance plan to cover major medical problems.

“If somebody goes into the emergency room with a major injury, it’s going to take $100,000 to cure and they don’t have insurance, they’re not going to be able to pay it, and guess who pays it?” Allen said.

At the tour’s stop at Liberty University (web) , tort reform was on people’s minds.

“My step-mother is a doctor in Salem at Lewis-Gale, and she’s paying about $80,000 a year in malpractice insurance,” LIberty University student James Lawrence said.

Which increases health care costs, and people here wore their thoughts on lawmaker’s plans for government-run health care.

“They’re trying to say there’s going to be freedom and stuff. There’s not going to be no freedom,” Harold Megginson said.

Ben Marchi with Americans For Prosperity said, “We want to send the message to our federal legislators that they need to keep their hands off our health care.”

Americans for Prosperity will continue the Virginia leg of their tour Thursday. They’ll start at Salem’s City Hall, and work their way west to Marion, Lebanon, and Tazewell County. Now, it’s worth noting that a recent Pew Research Center poll found 55-percent favor a government health insurance plan.
