Coverage Group Health Insurance
![]() |
If your employer offers group health insurance, you may be wondering how it affects you. For an adult working hard to support themselves and their families, health insurance is a must-have. You never know if or when you will become sick or injured. With the high cost of medical care, only the extremely rich can afford to be without a good health insurance plan. If your employer offers a health plan it is a wise idea to learn as much as you can about coverage group health insurance and how it can benefit you and your dependents.
Group health coverage is available for group members (such as employees.) This coverage takes care of medical expenses such as emergencies, illnesses, injuries, preventative measures and more without requiring the patient to pay up front cash or even pay for the entire amount. There are several ways the plan may work. Your employer may cover the cost of your healthcare plan. Or, you may have a certain amount deducted from your paycheck every week to cover the cost of your health insurance. Some employers pay a portion of the expenses and the employee pays the rest. It may cost extra to add your spouse and/or children to your health plan.
Two terms you need to be familiar with that may relate to your health plan are copayment and deductible. The copayment is an amount you are responsible for at the time of a healthcare visit or pharmacy purchase. An example would be something like $10 per prescription or $20 per doctor visit. These figures are strictly hypothetical and what you will actually pay or if you have a copayment at all depends on the details of your plan. A deductible is the amount you are responsible for before the coverage kicks in. This amount varies widely from plan to plan.
Exactly what coverage group health insurance will give you depends on your plan. Most plans cover inpatient and outpatient doctor and hospital visits, prescriptions and certain preventative and diagnostic procedures for certain people, such as yearly mammograms for women over 40. Some plans also include dental and vision care. Others do not. You may be able to add dental and vision to your plan for an additional price. Your insurance administrator at your workplace can explain the details of your healthcare plan.
